The Scherer Scholarship Fund

"The Saint John’s experience and the ‘sense of place’ have had a profound lifelong affect on me. We want to provide this same experience to other young men," said Mike Scherer when he and Susanne announced a $1 million estate gift to establish a new scholarship in their family’s name.
The Scherer’s Benedictine ties run deep. Mike’s, SJU ’67, date back to his days at Saint John’s and Sue’s to the time she was attending the St. Cloud School of Nursing, a precursor to Saint Benedict’s nursing program. They have also been members of a Benedictine parish since 1974. Both Mike and Susanne are committed to expanding opportunities for the less fortunate and are actively involved in programs in the Twin Cities area which have Benedictine ties. Susanne is a teacher with the Jeremiah Program, a residence for unwed mothers in Minneapolis. Mike is the current foundation chair with St. Therese’s program for the aged in New Hope and a past board member of Summit Academy OIC which serves the poor in Minneapolis.
While at Saint John’s, Mike played football and was a member of the 1963 National Championship team. He recently retired from Scherer Brothers Lumber Company where he was Vice President of Operations. He and Susanne participated on the Twin Cities National Consultation Team and they have been strong supporters of the Annual Fund for the University and Abbey.
Mike and Susanne are parents of four children: Gretchen, Ellen, Matthew and Catherine.
