XIII. Stella Maris Chapel – Gifts of $2,500-$3,249
(Vincent Schiffrer OSB, 1872; rebuilt 1915; Cloud Meinberg OSB, 1943; renovated 1989) Named for the Virgin Mary – Star of the Sea or Stella Maris in Latin – the first chapel was built by monks in 1872 and destroyed by fire in 1903. On June 13, 1915, Abbot Peter Engel laid the cornerstone for a second chapel. This second chapel was replaced by the present one, built from fieldstone in 1943. Its simple beauty and peaceful location beckon to all, making the Stella Maris Chapel a favorite destination for walkers and canoeists.
XIV. Simons Hall – Gifts of $3,250-$3,999
(Raphael Knapp OSB, 1910; renovated 1989; on National Historic Register) Named for Bob '52 and Anne Simons, Simons Hall was Saint John’s science facility until 1966. The building now houses the sociology, political science, and business departments.
XV. Wimmer Hall – Gifts of $4,000-$4,999
(Charles Aldrich, 1901; renovated 1928, 1964 & 1999; on National Historic Register) Named in honor of Boniface Wimmer, the first archabbot of Saint Vincent’s Archabbey, which is the founding abbey of Saint John’s, Wimmer Hall was originally the library and museum. Today it is home to various university-affiliated offices and programs, including KSJR and KSJN of the Minnesota Public Radio network, which was founded at Saint John’s in 1967.
