X. Abbey Church – Gifts of $1,000-$1,499
(Marcel Breuer, 1961; on National Historic Register) The crown jewel of renowned Hungarian architect Marcel Breuer’s comprehensive design plan, the Abbey Church is the focal point of the Abbey, Parish, and University communities and the most well recognized symbol of Saint John’s. Four times a day the monks and their guests gather in the church for the public celebration of Morning Prayer, Midday Prayer, the Eucharist, and Evening Prayer.
XI. Greg House – Gifts of $1,500-$1,999
(Gregory Steil OSB, 1907; renovated 1933 & 1984; on National Historic Register) Named after Gregory the Great, Saint Gregory House served for seventy years as the campus infirmary, and at one time also housed a dentist's office. The building has been used as an undergraduate residence hall since the last renovation in 1984.
XII. Guild Hall (Old Gym) – Gifts of $2,000-$2,499
(Charles Aldrich, 1901; moved & size doubled 1937; enlarged 1950; renovated 1986; on National Historic Register) Although it had only a dirt floor at first, the building’s special features included an elevated running track and two basement bowling alleys. In 1937 the entire structure was moved 150 feet to the west on railroad tracks to allow for campus expansion. Today the Old Gym is home to the Collegeville Post Office and is used for social events and intramural athletics.
