XIX. Great Hall – Gifts of $10,000-$14,999
(Gregory Steil OSB, 1879; renovated 1891, 1937 & 1961; on National Historic Register) Rising on the northeast corner of the Quadrangle is the Great Hall, constructed as the original abbey church and serving the worshipping community until 1961. The mural of Christ, painted by Br. Clement Frischauf OSB from the Abbey of Beuron, dominates the room.
The Great Hall is now the site of many social gatherings and is home to the Information Desk, where guests are greeted and pickup loaves of the world-famous Saint John’s Bread.
XX. Benet Hall – Gifts of $15,000-$19,999
(John Comes, 1921; renovated 1996-99; on National Historic Register) Named for the French derivation of Saint Benedict, Saint Benet Hall was the first building constructed for the exclusive use of students and still serves as an undergraduate residence. In its early years, the building also housed four bowling lanes, a poolroom, card rooms, handball courts, and a candy store.
XXI. Stephen B. Humphrey Theater – Gifts of $20,000 -$24,999
(O’Meara & Hills, 1927; renovated 1984-85; on National Historic Register) The Stephen B. Humphrey Theater and Music Hall contain studios for the music faculty, vocal and instrumental class and practice rooms, and the Gertken Organ Studio with a Marrin organ. After the renovation, the theater was named in honor of Stephen B. Humphrey—teacher, mentor, and friend to three generations of students.
