What's New with the Class of '70
Update on Bill Johnson
As many of you may know, Bill Johnson, our classmate and former Class of ’70 class agent, is recuperating from an airplane crash in Shanghai in late November. A Caring Bridge site has been established and can be accessed by the link.
It looks like Bill may be home by Christmas. I am sure that Bill would appreciate an electronic message as he recovers from this ordeal. He can fill in the details at our class reunion Oct. 1-3.
October 2009 CSB/SJU Faculty Forum discussion on SJU in the late 1960s
Tom O’Connell (student activist and 1969 SJU graduate), and Joe Farry (Professor Emeritus, Political Science) shared their experiences of SJU in the late 1960's in an October Friday Forum. They discuseed what was going on behind the Pine Curtain in the late 1960s? Did it mirror the upheat of other educational institutions? The audienced learned about the CSB-SJU student-initiated coed living arrangement known as “The Farm,” the issue of coed classes, the debate over whether to allow the scandalous Firehouse Theater troupe to perform on campus, and a host of other contentious issues from the period. No Johnnie Left Behind Challenge
Connie and Tom Schutta have taken on the No Johnnie Left Behind Challenge and made an increased Annual Fund gift to Saint John's in June. Tom says, "Connie and I are suckers for a good deal so we decided to be "Good Fellows" and take advantage of the matching funds. Connie's dad graduated from SJU in 1942, so her loyalty goes back a long way. It meant a lot to both of us to have Nate graduate from Saint John's as well (Class of '98). We hope that our grandson (Everett) will represent the fourth generation at SJU. By contributing to the No Johnnie Left Behind program we hope other families can enjoy this same tradition."

Below, Mike Marchand (left) and Bill O’Connell show their Johnnie colors while traveling together with their wives in Italy in October.

See how one member of the SJU Class of ’70, Bill O’Connell, celebrated his sixtieth birthday, a milestone year for most classmates these days.

Stay up-to-date with Saint John’s!
A conference call was recently held for all class agents and committee members for an update on Saint John’s. Click here to see the notes from the call.
What is a Class Committee?
Class Committee members are volunteers from each class who gather to enjoy the kind of camaraderie that only Johnnies can share. They work together to connect other classmates to Saint John’s and to each other.
So How Can I Get Involved?
If you’d like to be involved with our class committee, please contact Thom Woodward, 320.363.7303. Over the coming year, our class will be working on supporting the Four Cornerstones of the Alumni Association:
1. Student Recruitment: Asking classmates to refer potential students to the CSB/SJU Admission Office. (To do this, please visit the Online Referral Page.)
2. Student Preparation: Preparing current Johnnies for life after graduation through job placement, internships, and mentoring.
3. Alumni Connections: Enriching the lives of our 20,000 alumni and engaging them in support of the Saint John's community, as well as reconnecting them in the online community or at SJU events.
4. Resource Development: Addressing the financial needs of the SJU community by supporting the Annual Fund or Capital Campaign.
We'd love to see you get involved, so please contact Thom Woodward today. The Class Committee is a great way to get reconnected to Saint John's or to strengthen the connections that you already have.
