Post a Memory
Many of us have memories of Saint John’s that we like to share with other Johnnies when we get together. Now, even if we can’t be together in person, we can still share some of our favorite thoughts about our alma mater and our time together. To do this, please email your story to Thom Woodward. The Saint John’s staff will post these memories, and we’ll soon have a link so we can read what our fellow classmates have to say. To learn more about where your classmates are today, visit Class Notes.

A Note from Jim Nicholson '68
I was saddened to see that Pat Antrim died and on my birthday. I have no idea of Pat's life after SJU, but in 1964 he was a stocky, cheerful guy from Breckenridge.
One January weekend, Pat invited Steve Heinemann and me to hitchhike to Breckenridge for the weekend. We started early on a very still, very bright Saturday morning. The temperature was -26. Only a stupid Okie would have agreed to such a plan. I had a pair of heavy Sears boots that my father, a guy from Tennessee, insisted I would need in Minnesota winters, and the Breckenridge adventure seemed like the perfect opportunity to break them in.
We got lucky leaving campus and managed the first 40 miles pretty quickly. After that our luck ran pretty thin. As you winter veterans know, the stillness of the weather masked the temperature, and we got very cold standing there pleading by the highway. My Sears boots did not keep my feet warm, but they sure kept them freezing once the cold set in. An elderly woman picked us up and got us to within 60 miles of Breckenridge.
The afternoon was wearing on when Pat called his mom to come and get us. She did, and we lived. That evening, as the temperature continued to drop, Pat's parents took us to the country club for dinner. His dad, a locomotive engineer, left the car running in parking lot the entire time we were there. I remember his saying that having a warm car running was worth a quarter tank of gas. I couldn't have agreed more.
Pat taught me to play cribbage, a mixed gift I admit. Already prone to mismanaging time, Pat gave me an important tool to mismanage it more effectively. We spent many hours honing our point counting skills. He was a great friend.
I never hitchhiked again, and I never again wore those miserable boots.
Jim

A Note about Sergio Lugo '68
Sergio Lugo '68 lives in Denver with wife Pam (40 years this December). He is retired from work and yet heavily involved in stamp activities, and President of the Rocky Mountain Philatelic Library (RMPL) in Denver. He has completed 4 self published monographs on social welfare organizations that worked with the military in the First World War, and had a book published entitled CAMP GENTER: COLORADO GHOST TOWN MAIL. He has three kids - one a youth pastor in Valrico, Florida; another a case manager/supervisor at a Colorado Youth Correctional Facility, and the oldest is a social activist and Green Party candidate for U.S. Senator in Tennessee. Sergio will be at the reunion, and hopes to see many (old) classmates. |

A Note From Dr. Patrick A. O'Dougherty '68 Thomas, I have published through the Library of Poetry two volumes of poetry this year containing my poetry, and I am featured in the St. Paul Almanac which is having its book release on September 27, 2008. These publications are my contribtion to the Class of 1968 Reunion. Could these publications be noted on the reunion website? Also, I just completed a stint as an Obama Fellow in Sheboygan, WI. It is a great honor to be awarded an Obama Fellow. Thanks, Dr. Patrick A. O'Dougherty |

So How Can I Get Involved?
If you’d like to be involved with our class committee, please contact Thom Woodward at twoodward@csbsju.edu or at 320.363.2586. Over the coming year, our class will be working on supporting the Four Cornerstones of the Alumni Association:
- Student Recruitment: Asking classmates to refer potential students to the CSB/SJU Admission Office. (To do this, visit the Online Referral Page).
- Student Preparation: Helping prepare current Johnnies for life after graduation through job placement, internships, and mentoring.
- Alumni Connections: Helping enrich the lives of our 20,000 alumni and engaging them in support of the Saint John’s community, and reconnecting them in the online community or at SJU events.
- Resource Development: Helping address the financial needs of the SJU community by supporting the Annual Fund or Capital Campaign.
We’d love to see you get involved, so please contact Thom Woodward today. The Class Committee is a great way to get reconnected to Saint John’s or to strengthen the connections that you already have.
