Post a Memory

Many of us have memories of Saint John’s that we like to share with other Johnnies when we get together. Now, even if we can’t be together in person, we can still share some of our favorite thoughts about our alma mater and our time together. To do this, please email your story to Thom Woodward. The Saint John’s staff will post these memories, and we’ll soon have a link so we can read what our fellow classmates have to say. To learn more about where your classmates are today, visit Class Notes.

Terry Dooley ’51 Receives National Awards for Engineering

The American Concrete Institute made Dooley an “Honorary Member”, one of five awards given nationally.  It was presented at the national convention in San Antonio last March.

The September state convention in San Diego, the Structural Engineers Association of California named Dooley and four others statewide as new “Fellows” of the association. Citations for Dooley’s award listed these reasons, in summary:

  • Technical contributions in the field of seismic upgrading of existing buildings.
  • Construction management of major structures culminating in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles.
  • The founding and building of the ACE (Architecture, Construction, Engineering) Mentor Program in southern California.

Dooley continues to do volunteer work for ACE. ACE has about 350 active students on 17 teams in inner-city high schools. Through seven years, they have encouraged several hundred students to continue on to college, and have seen about a dozen through university degrees. The means: Person to person contact by about 90 professional volunteer mentors, plus seed money scholarships.

Following graduation from St. John’s, Dolley received engineering degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and from UCLA.

A conference call was recently held for all class agents and committee members for an update on Saint John’s. Click here to see the notes from the call.

What is a Class Committee?

Class Committee members are volunteers from each class who gather to enjoy the kind of camaraderie that only Johnnies can share. They work together to connect other classmates to Saint John’s and to each other.

So How Can I Get Involved?

If you’d like to be involved with our class committee, please contact Thom Woodward, 320.363.7303. Over the coming year, our class will be working on supporting the Four Cornerstones of the Alumni Association:

1.     Student Recruitment: Asking classmates to refer potential students to the CSB/SJU Admission Office. (To do this, please visit the Online Referral Page.)

2.     Student Preparation: Preparing current Johnnies for life after graduation through job placement, internships, and mentoring.

3.     Alumni Connections: Enriching the lives of our 20,000 alumni and engaging them in support of the Saint John's community, as well as reconnecting them in the online community or at SJU events.

4.     Resource Development: Addressing the financial needs of the SJU community by supporting the Annual Fund or Capital Campaign.

We'd love to see you get involved, so please contact Thom Woodward today. The Class Committee is a great way to get reconnected to Saint John's or to strengthen the connections that you already have.
